First-Night Box Checklist
Pack one box you can open first, before the house turns into cardboard weather. Print a checklist, add your own items, and make an “Open First” label for the box.
What to pack first
A first-night box holds everything you need between the moving truck leaving and the bed being assembled. Pack items you would normally reach for in the first twelve hours: toiletries, bedding, a change of clothes, chargers, medications, pet supplies, kids comfort items, basic tools, and coffee. The goal is survival, not comfort.
One box or one per room
One well-packed first-night box per family is usually enough. If you have kids or pets, add a separate box with their essentials. Nobody should be digging through bathroom supplies to find a favorite stuffed animal at midnight. Keep boxes labeled clearly so they are not carried to storage.
Why open-first labels help
An Open First label on a box tells every mover and helper that this box does not go to the garage or storage. It stays in the bedroom or kitchen and gets opened tonight. Use the Open First label generator below to make a bold, visible label. Combine it with a room marker and a clear box label so the system works even in the chaos of moving day.

Print checklist and Open First labels on plain paper. For the label, consider printing on colored paper or cardstock so it stands out from the other boxes.
- Use Actual Size / 100% scaling. Turn off Fit to Page.
- Test on plain paper first before using label stock.
- If your printer has a Labels / Heavyweight paper option, enable it.
- Do not use Fit to Page for Avery sheets — it will misalign the grid.
- Browser print dialogs vary because printers are tiny chaos machines.
- Everything stays in your browser unless you export it.
- No account. No uploads. No data sent anywhere.
- CSV export is entirely user-controlled.
- Clearing browser data may remove saved drafts.
